UMD Students Take to the Lake

Shortly after dawn, 11 students in Instructor Angela Sharp's Calculus for the Natural Sciences class took off on the Blue Heron.

The Blue Heron is a research vessel operated by the Large Lakes Observatory. The students spent the morning collecting data while learning how math applies to real-world science.

After collecting data at six different locations, the students gathered around the table in the boat's galley and Sharp displayed data from her computer on the galley television for an hour of instructional time as the boat made its way back to the dock in Duluth.
