Students Tackle Stormwater

Students work with the Natural Resources Research Institute to create a stormwater master plan.

As you probably know, this week we celebrated World Water Day. In honor of water, we wanted to highlight an interdisciplinary group of students working with the Natural Resources Research Institute to create a stormwater master plan. The team was comprised of students with majors including civil engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental studies, environmental science, biology, graphic design and history as well as staff from inside the NRRI.

The goals of the project included: stormwater management to protect Miller Creek, an impaired trout stream, reduce runoff through a green roof, rainwater harvesting, wetland creation,  increased habitat for pollinators, carbon sequestration, wind break, and energy reduction. The project was fueled by a growing concern for Miller Creek as well as NRRI’s role in providing replicable solutions for improving water quality. We are always excited to witness the positive effects NRRI and our student’s research has in our community!
