Greenhouse Orchids Win Awards

Award winning orchids on display at UMD Greenhouse.

UMD Greenhouse Manager Matt Jahnke recently received two ribbons for orchids entered into the Winter Carnival Orchid Show. They are pictured above. The pink orchid on the left is Dendrobium Nobile and it won first place in its class. The cream-colored orchid on the right is Dendrobium Micro Chip and it took home a third place ribbon for its division.

The show is an annual event hosted by the Orchid Society of Minnesota and the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory and features the largest display of privately owned orchids in the region. This year’s contest was held at the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory in St. Paul, Minn. and judges came from all over the Midwest to bestow awards to a wide variety of orchid classes.

Congrats to the greenhouse crew and Matt for taking such good care of these beautiful orchids along with all of the other plants featured in the UMD Biology Department's Greenhouse.
