New SCSE Dean Announced

Dr. Wendy Reed is UMD’s new Swenson College of Science and Engineering (SCSE) dean.

She comes to UMD from North Dakota State University, where she served as a professor and department head in Biological Sciences.

“I am thrilled that the Dr. Reed has accepted our offer. The Swenson College of Science and Engineering is a central component of UMD, and plays a significant role in delivering on our teaching, research, and service mission,” says Fernando​ Delgado, Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.Dr. Reed brings tremendous experience and talent, and we anticipate that she will work well with the faculty, staff, and students of the college.”

Dr. Reed received her Bachelor of Arts from Kalamazoo College and her Ph.D. from Iowa State University. She says she’s looking forward to being on campus. “I am excited to be joining the UMD community and SCSE team,” says Reed. “The focus on students and discovery at UMD brings opportunity to grow programs that nurture student success and faculty and staff achievement.

The University of Minnesota Board of Regents officially approved Reed’s appointment at its meeting on July 13, 2018.

Reed will begin serving as the SCSE dean later this summer. She’s the school’s fifth dean.

Previous SCSE Dean Joshua Hamilton went to Rhode Island College in Providence to become provost in May, 2017. Dr. Andrea Schokker, civil engineering faculty member and former executive vice chancellor of academic affairs, has been serving as interim dean since that time.

“I would like to thank Dr. Andrea Schokker for stepping in to the interim role and providing consistent and very able leadership to the college and on our leadership councils. I am appreciative that UMD has faculty with the skills and commitment of a Dr. Schokker,” says Delgado.

Swenson College includes all the “STEM” disciplines (science, technology, engineering, math) at UMD. With more than 3,000 undergraduates and 200 graduate students, SCSE also houses the Large Lakes Observatory, the UMD Air Force ROTC program, and the Iron Range Engineering program.

SCSE connects students with hands-on research opportunities through its collaboration with multiple research institutions and area businesses.
