Archiving Canal Park's Transformation in Time

Students document the history of Canal Park through story maps.

In collaboration with the UMD Archives, Kathryn A. Martin Library, and Geospatial Analysis Center, students enrolled in Visual Journalism with Assistant Professor Jennifer Moore at the UMD during fall 2018 used Esri software to learn how to tell visual stories using mapping technology.

Each student conducted research using online sources and archival materials to craft digital story maps. The result is a collaborative project with 25 unique stories about Canal Park in Duluth, Minnesota, that spans over 100 years.

For many students, this was their first time using mapping software. Some discovered archival materials that appear in digital form for the first time on these maps.
