SCSE Female Student Athlete Recognition Ceremony

The event will be held on Friday, November 13.

This 2015-2016 season marks the 50th anniversary of Women’s Athletics at UMD. As part of the celebration to mark this special occasion, UMD’s Swenson College of Science & Engineering (SCSE) is recognizing the female student athletes of the College at the Friday, November 13, Bulldog Women’s Hockey game at Amsoil Arena.

There are 48 women currently pursuing science, math, and engineering degrees within SCSE while participating in a varsity college sport. “That takes major dedication,” said SCSE Dean Joshua Hamilton. “Coursework in science and engineering can be very demanding, so when you add all the commitments that come with athletics, you need to be incredibly organized to manage it all successfully. These young women are both excellent students and accomplished athletes, and their teams all participate in community service."

In addition to introducing the current student athletes at the game, SCSE will host a party for them and other special guests during the hockey match. Local alumni with an SCSE connection and history of participating in UMD women’s sports have also been invited to the event. The general public is encouraged to attend the game to help show appreciation for the efforts of all these hard working students.

Currently, there are 151 female student athletes at UMD with an average grade point average of 3.26. “We’re proud of all our UMD athletes,” said Hamilton. “And with the 50th anniversary celebration this year, it seemed like the perfect time to publicly acknowledge our pride and support of Swenson’s female student athletes.”

SCSE has approximately 3,100 undergraduates and 220 graduate students. The College is home to ten academic departments, in addition to the Large Lakes Observatory, the UMD Air Force ROTC program, and the Iron Range Engineering program, and connects students with hands-on research opportunities through its collaboration with multiple research institutions and area businesses.
