UMD Expert Jeremy Youde, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts

Internationally-recognized expert on global health politics, member of the editorial board of Global Health Governance, and current chair of the Global Health Section of the International Studies Association.

Dean Youde says halting the spread of the coronavirus requires more open communication, deeper international partnerships, and stronger targeted action the world over. He’s interested in understanding the factors that promote or hinder international cooperation on disease epidemics.

"Stopping an epidemic isn't just about the science; it's also about the policy. When you have diseases spreading across borders rapidly, you need to get a bunch of different governments, international organizations, and private groups to cooperate--but we know that cooperation in the international realm is difficult.”

“We're never going to stop disease outbreaks from happening, and we don't know when or where the next one will occur, so it's all the more important that we take steps now to prepare for future epidemics and understand the political, economic, social, and legal tools that we have to keep outbreaks from spreading too far."
