UMD's Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium will premier of “Polaris: The Space Submarine and the Mystery of the Polar Night” on Saturday, July 9 at 2 p.m.
Saturday afternoons at the Planetarium are geared towards a younger audience, and “Polaris” is no exception. Audience members will follow the half-hour-long story of a penguin named James and Vladimir the polar bear, a surprising pair of characters who reside on opposite sides of the world in real life. James and Vlad combine the ideas of questioning and objectiveness and use the scientific method to make discoveries about the poles.
With vibrant animation and comedic characters, Planetarium Director Marc Seigar says, “”Polaris” is a great show for kids of all ages and adults will enjoy it too.”
This new Planetarium show will play every Saturday throughout July at a cost of $5 for adults, $3 for kids ages six to 12 and free for kids under six. UMD students with ID also get a discount and can see the show for $3.
The Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium is part of UMD’s Swenson College of Science & Engineering. The college has about 3,100 undergraduates and 220 graduate students and is home to ten academic departments, as well as the Large Lakes Observatory, the UMD Air Force ROTC program, and the Iron Range Engineering program.
