November 2017 news from faculty and staff of the College of Pharmacy Duluth.

Heather Blue, assistant professor, and Laura Palombi, assistant professor, presented "Naloxone: A Critical Tool to Fight the Opioid Crisis" to over 50 health care professionals (pharmacists, physicians, nurses, dentists) in Duluth on October 23, 2017. Collaborators included Beth Bilden, MD; Lauren Hanson, PharmD; St. Louis County Public Health & Human Services; and the Minnesota Department of Health.

Dawn Carlson, assistant professor, presented a breakout session titled "Incorporating EPAs into APPE Evaluations" at the E*Value National User Conference held September 20-22, 2017, in Minneapolis. E*Value is the software platform used by the College of Pharmacy for experiential rotation management.

Kerry Fierke, associate professor, and Megan Neuberg, PD4, presented "Leadership Experiences in Healthcare" at the University of Minnesota Duluth Healthcare Management Association Meeting on September 26, 2017.

Fierke presented "Developing Leaders: An Instructional Practice Designed to Identify and Achieve Meaningful Learning Outcomes" at the International Leadership Association 19th Annual Global Conference held October 12-15, 2017, in Brussels, Belgium.

Keri Hager, associate professor, received one of three American Interprofessional Health Collaborative (AIHC) Scholar Awards that covered registration for attendance at Collaborating Across Borders VI. Collaborating Across Borders is North America’s premier interprofessional health care education and collaborative practice conference. Building on the highly successful CAB Conference series (I, II, III, IV, and V), CAB VI links educators, researchers, practitioners, students and patients from Canada and the United States in essential discussions around interprofessional health care education, practice, leadership and policy in North America.

Michelle Johnson-Jennings, associate professor, K. Walters, and Meg Little, assistant professor, had their article, “And [They] even followed her into the hospital: Primary care providers' attitudes toward referral for traditional healing practices and integrating care for Indigenous patients” published in the Journal of Transcultural Nursing. 2017 Sep. doi 104365961773181.

Steven Just, Duluth PD2, was elected the Junior National Student Representative for the American Indian Science and Engineering Society.

Gardner Lepp, education program specialist 2, and Jean Moon led a roundtable discussion on "Precepting Millennials" at the MPhA Medication Therapy Management Symposium on September 7, 2017, in St. Paul.

Palombi was invited to participate in a roundtable with Lt. Governor Tina Smith in Duluth on September 20, 2017. The purpose was to learn more about the partnership between the city, county, non-profits, and medical providers and recent grant funding to address the opioid epidemic.

Palombi presented "Community Engagement to Address Opioid Use Disorder" to over 800 medical professionals at the 1199SEIU symposium, "The Opioid Crisis and Healthcare's Responses: Interprofessional Perspectives," on September 23, 2017, in Manhattan, N.Y.

Palombi and Ali Mueller (Carlton County Public Health Educator) co-presented "Community Strategies to Combat Substance Use Disorder" to the Carlton County "Refire!" group on October 2, 2017, in Carlton, Minn.

Palombi authored the October 2, 2017, MinnPost opinion piece, "We need the president to enact an opioid state of emergency."

Palombi presented "Community Engagement to Address Opioid Use Disorder" at the October 9, 2017, Mini Medical School Series at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.

Palombi served as a panelist at the Grand Portage Community Forum on Heroin and Opioid Abuse held October 12, 2017, at the Grand Portage Indian Reservation. She shared more about the work of other substance use coalitions around the state, presented on the benefits of drug court, and shared some of the work being done to engage health care systems and providers in naloxone prescribing.

Palombi led the planning of (and spoke at) the Pine County and Mille Lacs Band Mental Health Forum held October 17, 2017, at Grand Casino Hinckley. This event, which attracted over 200 members of the Pine County and Mille Lacs Band community, hosted 10 guest speakers including Congressman Rick Nolan and 24 mental health related resource tables.

Palombi and Blue were featured in the October 23, 2017, Duluth News Tribune article, "Naloxone needs to be more readily available at Northland pharmacies, health professionals told."

Palombi served as a panelist at the Ely Community Forum on Opioid and Methamphetamine Abuse on October 25, 2017.

Mark Schneiderhan, associate professor, and Blue are featured in the October 3, 2017, Health Talk story, "Unfamiliarity with naloxone rules leads to low prescribing rates among MN providers."

K. A. Funk, C. Kolar, Sarah K. Schweiss, assistant professor, J. M. Tingen, and K. K.
