The book, recently published by Routledge, focuses on primary learning outcomes of internationalization efforts. It provides examples of real practice around the globe. Dr. Pedersen’s chapter/case study is entitled ‘Comprehensive and integrated intercultural development: A model for institutional change.’

“This line of research began with my classroom scholarship of teaching and learning,” Pedersen says. “In 2005, I started using the Intercultural Development Inventory to assess student learning outcomes related to intercultural development while teaching a study abroad course. That information led me to begin to develop intentional pedagogy for our yearlong study in England program. That program is featured in the book Student Learning Abroad: What Our Students Are Learning, What They’re Not, and What We Can Do About It.

“I brought the lessons I learned there back to infuse intercultural pedagogy into my courses at UMD. That pedagogy was then adapted for staff and faculty development and training. A system-wide model evolved from that work. This is the second book chapter on the comprehensive model. I am working on more outcome/assessment of institutional change for the next steps.”
