Paula J. Pedersen, director of UMD’s Education for Inclusive Excellence and assistant professor of Psychology, contributed a chapter/case study to the book Intercultural Competence in Higher Education: International Approaches, Assessment, and Application.
“This line of research began with my classroom scholarship of teaching and learning,” Pedersen says. “In 2005, I started using the Intercultural Development Inventory to assess student learning outcomes related to intercultural development while teaching a study abroad course. That information led me to begin to develop intentional pedagogy for our yearlong study in England program. That program is featured in the book Student Learning Abroad: What Our Students Are Learning, What They’re Not, and What We Can Do About It.
“I brought the lessons I learned there back to infuse intercultural pedagogy into my courses at UMD. That pedagogy was then adapted for staff and faculty development and training. A system-wide model evolved from that work. This is the second book chapter on the comprehensive model. I am working on more outcome/assessment of institutional change for the next steps.”
