Gingerbread Houses, Art, and Winter Fun

Learning about World Cultures through Creative Play.

This fall, elementary education majors have been busy making art with children and teaching world culture on the way. The activities go beyond creating art. The sessions incorporate customs, culture, art history, and even language. They have worked with over 150 elementary students already in fall 2017 and their adventures continue into December. The students are part of Professor Alison Aune's education methods class.

Art education students have already assisted at one workshop and are volunteering to share Nordic crafts with the community.

Gingerbread houses at the Nordic Center
From 1-5 pm each Saturday and Sunday until December 9, visitors of all ages are invited to participate. The fun takes place at The Nordic Center, 23 Lake Avenue, in downtown Duluth. This community event is free, and everyone is invited to view the village, make Nordic crafts, and learn about a Nordic-Minnesota winter celebration.

The GINGERBREAD CITY is hosted by UMD's art education program, the Son’s of Norway Norton Lodge, and the Nordic Center of Duluth.
