Duluth Dances

Responding to a worldwide call by the Pina Bausch Foundation, dancers from Duluth made a short film based on German modern dancer, choreographer, dance instructor, and director Pina Bausch.

Dancers in Duluth

The world-wide project features films created by people from across the globe dancing a famous segment of Bausch's Four Seasons choreography, the "Nelken Line." Duluth community members and students from the University of Minnesota Duluth participated in the project and created the short film Duluth Dances the Nelken Line

Filming took place on three occasions at locations throughout Duluth, including at Hartley Nature Center, Glensheen Historic Estate, and Park Point beach. The performance was coordinated by Professor Kristen Hylenski, who teaches German language and culture classes in the UMD Department of World Languages and Culture, and filmed by Professor Betsy Hunt, instructor of digital media, animation, and performance in the UMD Art & Design department. The film that resulted will become part of the archive of the Pina Bausch Foundation.

Wim Wenders' Pina!

The imagination and physical work of the German modern-dance pioneer Pina Bausch are given tribute by Wim Wenders in this film. A long-planned film collaboration between the director and the choreographer was in preproduction when Bausch died in 2009. Two years later, Wenders decided to go ahead with the project, reconceiving it as an homage to his late friend. The result, shot in 3D, is a vivid representation of Bausch’s art. The film is enacted by a group of dancers from her company, the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch.
