“I love all of the outdoor activities available in Duluth. Through the Rec Sports and Outdoor Program at UMD, I made some wonderful memories.” says David M. Hernandez, a student in computer science and mathematics. David is a rock climbing instructor and guide at UMD. “Every rock climbing route is like a cool new puzzle you have to decipher. There’s no better feeling.”

Sabrina's hometown is Nowthen, Minnesota. She's doubling majoring in linguistics and cognitive science and will be graduating this upcoming summer. "Park Point Beach is my favorite spot to bring breakfast and watch the sunrise! It is definitely a Minnesotan experience to be sitting on a beach and listening to the waves, all while wearing a winter coat in 20 degree weather." Sabrina says.

"I discovered Stony Point with my boyfriend, Nate," says Makayla. "We were making our way back to Duluth, but we did one last stop to see what Stony Point, a new place for us, was all about. We saw the cool shack and I really loved the old weathered look. It's a really beautiful spot that gives me a lot of inspiration and allows me to be close to Lake Superior, which is something I always treasure.”

"Leif Erikson Park is right down the hill from me. There’s lots to do, from watching ships to looking for agates at the beach," says Audrey Schmidt. “The shore of Lake Superior is unique. The trees grow into unusual shapes because of the wind," says Lisa Roragen. Both Audrey and Lisa are seniors in the civil engineering program.

Heidi Wedel

Heidi Wedel

Heidi is from Savage, Minnesota, and is a criminology major. She expects to graduate in spring 2021. "I visited Duluth when I was eight and that was the driving factor for why I chose UMD. I fell in love with the historic city and kept wanting to come back. Whenever I am stressed, I go to Glensheen. It’s my safe place where I can appreciate the beauty of Lake Superior. My favorite pastime is to hunt for sea glass on the shore. Glensheen has fun options for everyone. You don’t hear a lot of stories about college kids hanging out at historical mansions, but you do find that in Duluth." says Heidi.
