The lecture will take place at 3:15 pm in UMD’s Life Science Building, Room 185. Shaw is a professor emeritus from New York’s Union College. In addition to his public presentation, he will be meeting with students of UMD’s Swenson College of Science and Engineering (SCSE).
Shaw has a long career pursuing research on a wide range of topics. His current focus is on the evolution of the Earth’s oceans and atmosphere including factors affecting early climates and the emergence of life. He also has expertise in energy policy including nuclear waste, energy resource development and is currently working on cost-effective approaches to carbon capture.
One of the organizers of this public event, Professor Howard Mooers said these events are typically very well attended. “I think the recognition of his birthday speaks to the respect we all have for Darwin’s legacy and how his work continues to inspire and create new avenues of research,” said Mooers.

SCSE has approximately 3,100 undergraduates and 220 graduate students.
