UMD Hosting Darwin Day Celebration

Friday, February 12, Charles Darwin Day.

darwin day
It may not be an official holiday in America, but Charles Darwin Day is recognized worldwide. Scientists at University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) will host a public event on Darwin Day Friday, February 12 to honor the famed scientist’s birthday and celebrate his life’s work. The event will feature a free public lecture from visiting professor Dr. George Shaw entitled, “Chemical Evolution: How Survival of the Fittest Applies to Molecules and Leads to Life.”

The lecture will take place at 3:15 pm in UMD’s Life Science Building, Room 185. Shaw is a professor emeritus from New York’s Union College. In addition to his public presentation, he will be meeting with students of UMD’s Swenson College of Science and Engineering (SCSE).

Shaw has a long career pursuing research on a wide range of topics. His current focus is on the evolution of the Earth’s oceans and atmosphere including factors affecting early climates and the emergence of life. He also has expertise in energy policy including nuclear waste, energy resource development and is currently working on cost-effective approaches to carbon capture.

One of the organizers of this public event, Professor Howard Mooers said these events are typically very well attended. “I think the recognition of his birthday speaks to the respect we all have for Darwin’s legacy and how his work continues to inspire and create new avenues of research,” said Mooers.

UMD has been marking the birth of Darwin with a lecture since 2009. The series is hosted by the Biology and Earth and Environmental Science departments. Additional details on this event can be found in the online UMD Events Calendar.

SCSE has approximately 3,100 undergraduates and 220 graduate students. The College is home to ten academic departments, in addition to the Large Lakes Observatory, the UMD Air Force ROTC program, and the Iron Range Engineering program, and connects students with hands-on research opportunities through its collaboration with multiple research institutions and area businesses. Learn more about SCSE.

UMD’s mission is to integrate liberal education, research, creative activity, and public engagement and prepare students to thrive as lifelong learners and globally engaged citizens. Find UMD online.
