Building (Bitty) Bridges

Toothpick bridge competition to be held at UMD.

UMD is hosting the annual Toothpick Bridge Competition on Tuesday, February 28 from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Civil Engineering Laboratory, 1303 Ordean Court.

High school students from around the region are invited to compete in building the strongest and the most economical bridge out of toothpicks. A link to the complete schedule can be found here.

Hundreds of students are planning on putting their knowledge of civil engineering to use while attempting to come out on top and impress the judges.

Civil Engineering Senior Laboratory Service Coordinator Mark Roberts says, “The purpose of the event is to show high school students what it means to be a civil engineer in a fun, hands-on atmosphere.”

This is the 24th year that UMD has been involved with the Toothpick Bridge Competition.
