Chinese Professor Receives CLA Teaching Award

Weiqing Zhang receives 2018 College of Liberal Arts Teaching Award

WLC is proud to share that Dr. Weiqing Zhang, Associate Professor of Chinese Area Studies, has received the 2018 CLA Teaching Award: Tenure-Track Faculty. The following is the description from the awards program:

For 30 years, Weiqing Zhang has been devoted to walking alongside every student on a path to educational achievement. In addition to teaching courses in Chinese language and culture for the Department of World Languages and Cultures, Dr. Zhang has re-established UMD's relationship with Ocean University in Qingdao, China through CLA's COIL program. As her colleague Milan Kovacovic puts it, "Weiqing is basically a one person program in Chinese Area Studies, an irreplaceable asset to CLA and UMD." To Dr. Zhang, "teaching is not just a job, but a life, a creed, a religion, and more." Dr. Zhang acts on her convictions by making her whole self available to students and, according to her colleagues, conducts "all activities in a calm, caring manner, with unfailing patience and courtesy." A former student writes, "to me and many others, she is so much more than just a teacher, but a mentor and role model, someone I strive to be like." Expressing her dedication, Dr. Zhang states, "I devote myself to them, seeking only to harvest their respect, love, and lifetime friendship."
