Type13: David Short

Assistant Professor David Short's new show opens Jan. 11 at Duluth Art Institute.

David Short, assistant professor, Department of Art & Design, has a new show opening on Thurs., Jan. 11 at the Duluth Art Institute. A reception will be held on Jan. 11 from 5-7 pm.  Short will present an Artist Talk on Wed., Jan. 31 from 6-7 pm. The show runs through Feb. 25 in DAI Morrison Gallery.

David Short’s practice involves interests in lettering, type, illustration, and graphic design. He was born and raised in Iowa where he studied graphic design, letterpress and printmaking at both Iowa State University and Savannah College of Art & Design. Currently Short is exploring Latin letterforms their construction, perception, and meanings of both self and their surrounding environments.

His solo exhibition at the Duluth Art Institute will feature the daily lettering/typographic explorations that were created and digitally photo-documented during the 2013 calendar year, as the first part of a three year daily experiment. Referencing 365-sketches, the resulting exhibition creates an inviting and optimistic environment to engage the viewer in considering the complex modes of human communication by transference and consumption. The individual works of shapes/letter forms vary from being legible and abstract, in order to illustrate the inherent flux of language in adapting to suit our individual needs as the primary tool for human communication.
