U-Spatial, the University of Minnesota group that is responsible for expertise in Geographic Information Science and remote sensing across the University, has awarded its annual Mapping Prizes, and two Program in Geography students were among the awardees.
Students are judged not only on their overall cartographic ability, but also on their ability to be visually compelling, revealing, and provocative, all while effectively telling a story.
Julia Hogan (Geography, Urban and Regional Studies, and GIS), won the Best Use Maps from an Undergraduate with her submission that highlights the location of sharps (needles and syringes) based on community tips to the Sharps Hotline during a time of increased opioid and heroin use.
Lexi Weihe (Urban and Regional Studies and GIS) was awarded two prizes. First, the Best Body of Work for an Undergraduate Student, based on her work on bark beetle impacts in the Sandia Mountains, storm surge vulnerability in New York State, and the use of LEED certification criteria for housing developments.
Lexi also was awarded the Most Provocative/Transformative Map for an Undergraduate Student, for her work focused on how culture influences Belizean housing and building materials.
