Avesa Rockwell Published in Lake Time Magazine

English, Linguistics, and Writing Studies professor writes about her passion for cycling in the Spring 2018 issue.

Associate Writing Program Administrator and Writing Studies Faculty Member Avesa Rockwell has published “The Culture of Gravel” in Lake Time Magazine.

“The piece,” Rockwell says, “captures what motivates people to take the road less traveled.” She adds, “These unsupported long-distance gravel cycling rides took root in Minnesota and have been transforming bike culture around the world.“

Local photographer Jeremy Kershaw and Rockwell collected images and stories of several long-distance gravel cyclists from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa.  “We met these cyclists through our Heck of the North events over the past ten years.” The Heck of the North is a series of competitive long-distance gravel cycling rides out of Two Harbors and Grand Marais, MN. CLA faculty member John Hatcher is also featured.

Rockwell teaches Advanced Writing and College Writing and has served for nearly a decade in various leadership roles in the Writing Program at UMD.
