Spotlight on Sustainability: Eco Rep Sheldon

First-year student. Biology major. Voter. She/her pronouns.

What kind of work do you do at UMD and how is sustainability a part of it?

“I am a student here but then I am in Eco Reps, and I’m trying to get more involved in MPIRG. I just think sustainability is really important, because we only have one planet so we’ve got to take care of it.”

What kind of sustainable actions do you take in your everyday life?

“Currently, I’m trying to eat more plant-based in my diet so I’m not really eating dairy, and I haven’t eaten meat in a couple years. And I’m trying to cut back, especially on fashion, because with a lot of things it’s like wear it once or with a brand like Forever 21, they’re cheap but they don’t last very long. So I’ve been thrift-shopping more and stuff like that. I’ve been trying to find little ways to be sustainable.”

Do you think it is important to vote, and why?

“I think it’s important to vote because it’s a forum where you can express your opinion and make changes. Sometimes it’s not maybe the most effective forum, but I do think it’s really important to vote.”
