Fall Break Teaching & Learning Workshops
It’s almost fall break. Both faculty and students are getting overwhelmed by the pace of the semester. Join the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning on Thursday, October 27th, to recharge your batteries with light conversation about the semester and how classes are going and get some ideas for reinvigorating your class for the last part of the semester. These events are jointly sponsored by UMD’s Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning and the Swenson College of Science & Engineering.
CETL Coffee Klatch

Do you find yourself wishing that you had more opportunities to talk with your fellow educators about the challenges you’re face this semester? Is there anything happening in your classes (good or bad) that you want to share with others? Wouldn’t it be nice if we had more informal opportunities to talk about our classes and teaching in general? Now we do!
Join us in Griggs Center from 8-10am for the CETL Coffee Klatch. This weekly event, sponsored by UMD’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), is an opportunity for all who teach at UMD to gather and talk about their teaching. Coffee and tea, along with some light snacks, will be provided.
Active Learning 101

Active learning has become quite the buzz word in STEM education due to overwhelming research demonstrating its effectiveness over traditional lectures in promoting student learning, motivation and retention. Many instructors would like to adopt active learning strategies, but have questions about how to get started, how much time it will take and how to get students on board. This introductory workshop is designed to introduce simple active learning strategies that are effective and can be implemented in large and small classes.
Overcoming Student Resistance to the Flipped Classroom

An offering from Magna Publishing, The Flipped Classroom: Strategies to Overcome Student Resistance and Increase Student Engagement, is a one-hour webinar providing strategies you can use to create a successful flipped learning experience for you and your students. Dr. Barbi Honeycutt, founder of FLIP It Consulting and an expert on the flipped classroom, is the presenter. More information on the webinar content and format can be found here.
The original webinar aired on Tuesday, October 18th, but we have access to a recording of the presentation thanks to support from the Active Learning Committee of the Swenson College of Science & Engineering. There will be time during and after webinar for discussion. Please note that this workshop isn’t just for faculty who are interested in flipping their classes, the ideas translate to many different class formats that require students to actively participate in class rather than simply sitting and taking notes.
