Welcome our new Sustainability Activities Coordinator, Jonna Korpi!

To meet the rising demand for student-focused sustainability activities on campus, the Office of Sustainability has added a new position.

Jonna Korpi, the Office of Sustainability's new sustainability activities coordinator, wants to live in a world where people are mindful of their impact on the world, random acts of kindness and generosity abound, and everybody reaches into the garbage to rescue recyclables. The position was funded through student service fees and Auxiliary Services.

As an emerging professional in the world of sustainability, she’s gathered knowledge through a Master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Washington Tacoma, focusing on Sustainable Systems. From there, she gained experience in small-scale organic farming, energy conservation and outreach, and green building practices and standards through several AmeriCorps service positions. Jonna also worked to improve recycling and composting rates in a multi-family housing complex in Seattle before coming home to roost in Duluth.

In her off time, you’ll often find Jonna on the Superior Hiking Trail, hunting for agates on the shore, or making art from things she’s found laying around or gathered from the woods.

Whether you’re as green as it gets or don’t know where to start, Jonna has tips and tricks that can be adapted to get started or dive deep. She’s excited to work with the students, staff, and faculty of UMD to make sustainable habits and choices part of the norm and lifestyle of campus. Get in touch with Jonna.
