Short-term programs are three to six-week programs led by UMD faculty and consisting only of UMD students. These programs take place during May or Summer session 2019.

Use Australia as your classroom to examine international business. Gain insight into how doing business internationally is different than operating in the United States. Learn how the implications of national differences in political economy, cultural, and ethical differences and legal environments affect business operations.
During the six weeks, you will study one of the oldest living languages and experience the unique culture. Through different cities and having direct contact with local people, you will get a glimpse of Chinese mindsets and Eastern philosophies. Emphasis will be placed on language application and the learning of the social norms, as well as communication skills.
Above all, we’ll experience the rich culture, food, music and lifestyles of the Cuban people, in a nation that is arguably one of the friendliest and safest places to travel in the world today. Cuba is a country in rapid change and the energy of the Cuban people is wonderfully contagious. Proud of their revolutionary accomplishments, Cubans are welcoming to Americans and others.
This country’s winning combination of the Andean mountains and highland environments, indigenous culture, colonial towns and exceptional wildlife—will certainly make earning 6 credits for an ANTH class one of the more memorable courses of your college career! During this program, you’ll put anthropology concepts in motion by fully engaging in experiential learning opportunities. Observe and engage while exploring various cultural and sustainability sites within Ecuador, all while acquiring and putting Spanish language skills into practice (all language levels welcome.)

England’s theatre traditions have been uniquely preserved—from the Roman Amphitheatres to Shakespeare's Globe to Drury Lane. We will visit all of these on our program and also see plays at landmark international theatres in and around London—from the West End to the Fringe—all of which are vital expressions of contemporary British culture.
While on this program, you’ll learn how outdoor education is used to teach about Protected Natural Areas by exploring the beautiful Finnish wilderness in the Karelia district. You’ll start by learning about the basic natural history of the region by studying plants, trees, birds, and wildlife native to the area.
Our course commences in Rome, travels to Florence, and culminates in Venice as we explore historical aspects of community/public health through innovative methods, such as dynamic classroom settings appropriately titled, ‘Walking’, ‘Creative’, ‘Floating’, ‘Nature-based’, and ‘Healing’.
In the summertime, the scenery of Siena and the surrounding province come alive with colors, fragrances, and spectacular cultural events such as the world-famous Palio as well as many smaller Medieval festivals. This is a rare study abroad opportunity directly related to sign language and Deaf culture, providing ASL users a linguistic and cultural immersion into the transnational Deaf-World.
Investigate Italy's rich heritage in the arts. The program will have a shared focus on the Renaissance and its parallel developments across the arts, but will also look at contemporary cultural influences and practice. A mix of lectures, field trips and discussions will supplement on-site learning. Take courses in music, drawing and art history.

Home to Machu Picchu and set high in the Andes mountains, Peru is a country full of exquisite food, vibrant art, and archaeological monuments left over from some of its ancient cultures. In this course, you will learn and study the unique conditions that characterize the food industry in Peru. You will explore how the growth in the food industry has important implications for the economy, health policy, Peruvian national identity, and the business environment.
Come face to face with the history of the Holocaust by visiting and engaging with key sites in Hitler's killing grounds in Poland. You’ll visit Auschwitz and explore the sites of the Warsaw Ghetto, study at Polin: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews, Treblinka, and Lodz. You’ll visit the ghetto, Schindler's Factory, and Plaszow camp in Krakow
Explore Salamanca, a World Heritage City, and study at the prestigious University of Salamanca, founded in 1218. The history of the city dates back to the Celts and Romans and is deemed to be among the most impressive Renaissance cities of Europe. Salamanca's unique appearance is enhanced by the golden hue of its sandstone buildings. The Plaza Mayor is among the largest and loveliest in the country.
