Traditionally, females are less likely to pursue careers in engineering and science which is why the week-long girls camp emphasizes hands-on, fun activities. The participants engage in a wide range of projects related to both engineering and physics.
Camp organizer and staff member of Swenson College’s Electrical Engineering Department Shey Peterson said, "This camp is a great way to show young people how fun learning about science and engineering can be and give them an idea of what being a scientist or engineer is like."
Additional faculty and staff from the Electrical Engineering and Physics Departments work with the kids as they team up to solve problems and construct projects.
Encouraging these middle-school-aged girls to pursue higher education and further science learning is one of the main goals of this event. Next week, a similar camp will be held for middle-school aged boys, too.
Swenson College of Science & Engineering has approximately 3,100 undergraduates and 220 graduate students. The College is home to ten academic departments, in addition to the Large Lakes Observatory, the UMD Air Force ROTC program, and the Iron Range Engineering program, and connects students with hands-on research opportunities through its collaboration with multiple research institutions and area businesses.
