Dr. Jeremy Youde has accepted the dean of the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) position and is scheduled to begin work on campus July 1, 2019. This marks a return for Youde, who served as a department head and faculty member at UMD from 2008-16.

“I’m thrilled to return to Duluth and to again be a part of the amazing community of students, staff, and faculty in the College of Liberal Arts,” says Youde. “There is such a dynamism within the College and the university, and I can’t wait to jump in and work with everyone to help make CLA the place where everyone can flourish and thrive.”

Youde is currently an associate professor in the Department of International Relations and deputy director of the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs at Australian National University. He also has a distinguished record as a scholar that includes authorship or editorship of six books and more than two dozen other scholarly publications.

The University of Minnesota Board of Regents will be asked to officially approve Youde’s deanship and additional faculty appointment with tenure as a professor in the Department of History, Political Science, and International Relations at its May, 2019 meeting.

Maher Stepping Down

Youde’s hire comes as College of Liberal Arts Dean Susan Maher announces her retirement from the position.

Maher has been at UMD for nine years and will return to the faculty after an administrative leave.

“I’d like to express my sincere thanks to Dr. Sue Maher for her excellent leadership and advocacy on behalf of the College of Liberal Arts,” says Fernando Delgado, Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. “Under her tenure, her college added impactful programs like the Master of Tribal Administration and Governance, as well as journalism and cultural entrepreneurship majors. We are very appreciative of her advocacy for liberal education and look forward to working with her in her new capacity.”
