Bulldogs Are Back

The start of the 2016-17 is underway at UMD and new freshman enrollment is up.

 Thousands of Bulldogs are on the cusp of calling Duluth home, as campus gears up for the start of the 2016-17 school year.

Enrollment Highlights

Overall fall 2016 enrollment is estimated at 10,850 total undergraduate, graduate, professional, and non-degree students. Official fall 2015 enrollment was 10,878.

New freshman enrollment is up more than 6% from last fall, with 2,130 freshman enrolled for fall 2016.

“The academic profile of UMD freshman remains strong and consistent with previous years,” says Mary Keenan, Assistant Vice Chancellor of Strategic Enrollment & Institutional Research. “Each of UMD’s five undergraduate colleges will enroll a larger freshman class this fall.”

Keenan says the average grade point average of UMD freshman is 3.5 and their average ACT composite score is 24.

Bulldog Welcome Week Begins

Duluth adds a small town to its population this week, as UMD welcomes more than

10,000 students to campus.

The action begins when with the unloading of the first incoming freshman on Tuesday, August 23 and barrels through the week until the first day of classes on August 29.

Move-in Day

When:             

Tuesday, August 23 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Where:            

Vehicles will be unloaded in front of Lake Superior Hall and at Griggs Hall (513 Niagra Court). Food tents and KUMD will be set up for families to enjoy at “Griggs Beach”, an area behind Lake Superior Hall.

Who:               

Chancellor Black and his leadership team will greet incoming freshman and their families while current students help with the move-in.

Bulldog Barbeque

When:             

Tuesday, August 23 from 5 – 7 p.mm.

Where:            

Malosky Stadium, 1336 University Drive

What:              

Incoming freshman will watch the mighty Division II Bulldogs scrimmage. The event includes performances by the UMD Marching Band and games for the whole family.

Convocation and Pep Rally

When:             

Wednesday, August 24 from 1:30 – 2 p.m.

Where:            

Romano Gym, 1216 Ordean Court

What:              

A formal welcome for students at a convocation at UMD’s Romano Gym. A pep rally showcasing UMD’s athletes and marching band follows the convocation.

Bulldog Scramble

When:             

Wednesday, August 24 from 4 – 5:30 p.m.

Where:            

Malosky Stadium, 1336 University Drive

What:              

Bulldog Scramble is the ultimate icebreaker. Organizers get incoming students out on the football field and facilitate an unprecedented meet and greet, including a lot of running round, high-energy rock paper scissor battles, and more fun than should be allowed in Malosky Stadium.
