Shades of Africa - Rise Up!

In March 2018, UMD presents the Shades of Africa Festival: Rise Up! as a commemoration for two of the greatest world leaders in the past century, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Nelson Mandela. 

The Shades of Africa festival celebrates the Centenary of Nelson Mandela and commemorates the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King.
On Friday, March 23 at 5 pm, in UMD's Tweed Museum, five Duluth leaders will join the Honorable Judge LaJune Thomas Lange, Minnesota's honorary Consul for South Africa in a presentation, Apartheid, Civil Rights & the Quest for Social Justice. The presenters include: Carl Crawford, vice president of NAACP Duluth Branch and human rights officer for City of Duluth; Janet Kennedy, 2017 candidate for Duluth City Council at Large, and founding member of the Duluth movement "Ain’t I a woman too?"; Jordon Moses, director of Blackbird Revolt, a business creating social change through creativity; and Daniel Oyinloye, artist, educator, mentor, and co-founder of ARE Youth Poetry Group, a member of the Kako Foundation. The presentation will also highlight ARE Youth Poetry.

The presentation will be followed by a 7:30 pm viewing in the Weber Music Hall of the film Selma, about the historic march from Selma to Montgomery. The showing of the film commemorates the 50th Anniversary of Martin Luther King’s Assassination.

On Saturday, March 24 at 7 pm, in UMD's Weber Music Hall, the film Sarafina will be shown as a commemoration for the 100th Anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s birth and the fight against Apartheid.
