Nationwide ‘Power Dialogs’ in April Give College Students a Voice in Their Future
Thousands of college students will meet in face-to-face dialogue with officials who can have an impact on the Clean Power planning that must be done for our common climate future.
In Duluth, the Power Dialog took place on April 12 at 5pm at the Zeitgeist Theater. Students from a UMD Anthropology course, Energy, Culture, and Society, hosted the event and posed their prepared questions to a panel of city, county, and state officials. Local citizen groups — Sierra Club, Interfaith Power and Light, Izaak Walton League — were also on stage to answer questions.
One-third of the carbon pollution in Minnesota comes from coal burning power plants. In Duluth, coal makes up over 69% of the utility fuel mix, a much higher percentage than the rest of the state. Serious health and climate impacts are at stake. Students are eager to ask how Duluth and St. Louis County can move forward in the spirit of the 2015 Paris accord, bringing more community solar and energy democracy to our local power grid.
City Council member Gary Anderson, County Commissioner Frank Jewel, State Representative Erik Simonson and other city officials and citizen groups were on hand to discuss bringing clean power to the region.
