Pulitzer Prize Winning Journalist to Visit UMD

The visit is part of the Society of Professional Journalists “Tools Training for Journalists” program.

The journalism program in the Department of Communication is hosting Rachel Piper, senior director of digital news at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, on Tuesday, September 24, to lead a seminar on best practices for journalists using Facebook. Sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), Piper’s visit is part of collaboration between the Facebook Journalism Project and SPJ Training Program

Piper will lead the seminar during a Digital Storytelling class in the journalism program. UMD students studying journalism and social media and area journalists are welcome to register for this free training event. The seminar begins at 11 a.m. in room 165 of the Labovitz School of Business and Economics, 1318 Kirby Drive. 

In 2010 Piper, along with her then-colleagues at The Salt Lake Tribune, won a Pulitzer Prize in Local Reporting for their investigative reporting of sexual assault on college campuses.
