Honoring History: Breakfast

As Dr. King said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is 'What are you doing for others?'" This breakfast is intended to reflect Dr. King's belief that everybody can achieve greatness through service.

This breakfast will be an opportunity to celebrate Dr. King by 'doing for others', together. Even at our most divided, helping others can heal. Proceeds from the breakfast will benefit the UNCF MLK Legacy Scholarship. During the breakfast, speakers will be televised live from the MLK event in Minneapolis.

The history of MLK will be reflected upon by this year's keynote speaker, Don Lemon, an Emmy Award-winning news anchor and journalist who currently hosts "CNN Tonight." In 2009, Ebony named Lemon one of the 150 most influential African Americans. He won an Edward R. Murrow award for his coverage on the Washington, D.C. snipers, as well as various other awards for his reporting on the AIDS epidemic in Africa as well as on Hurricane Katrina.

The Current Crisis: Rally and March

Following the breakfast, the MLK March will be held in downtown Duluth from Washington Center at 10 am.

The Rally will continue at the DECC promptly at noon. Keynote speaker Me'Lea Connelly as well as UMD SFA student Tolu Ekisola will be speaking at the Rally. Performers will include Dee VanDassor & Joyce who will sing the Negro National Anthem, ARE Poets, and Major Attraction Dance Group. Transportation will be provided from UMD to the event and back.

Meet in the UMD Bus Hub at 10:15 am.

All of the MLK events are co-sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. To learn more about upcoming events, visit UMD's Multicultural Calendar of Events.
