First Legislative Breakfast to be hosted at 110-year-old Glensheen Estate.

UMD is hosting its first-ever legislative breakfast tomorrow, Thursday, February 15, 2018 from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at Glensheen, 3300 London Road. Similar events are being held across the University of Minnesota’s five system campuses.

Lynne Williams, director of University Marketing and Public Relations, says the event is designed to engage the community and alumni with UMD’s legislative priorities and encourage them to advocate with their legislators. “We’ll talk about the Duluth’s portion of the University's capital request, and share how the proposals affect UMD.”

Speakers include Glensheen Director Dan Hartman, University of Minnesota Regent Dave McMillan, UMD Student Association President Mike Kenyanya, and UMD alumna Alyssa Schwanke,

The University of Minnesota’s capital request includes $4-million for Glensheen. The funding would allow the University to stabilize and renew critical infrastructure–  deteriorated garden terraces and walls, building envelope and basement structural support for the Carriage House, replace the existing pier at the lakeshore, as well as to renew HVAC, electrical, and fire protection systems in the mansion.

The capital request also includes $17.9-million in Higher Education Asset Preservation and Replacement (HEAPR) projects on UMD’s campus:

o    Chemistry Building, $8,500,000

o    Humanities Building, $8,500,000

o    Ward Wells Field House, $906,500

UMD’s portion of the University of Minnesota’s $238.5-million capital request is $28.1 million.
