Per the ACUI website, "The ACUI Facility Design Awards were created to encourage and recognize excellence in the design of student-centered facilities that support campus community building and student learning." The award was given for the 2013 renovation of the student organizations areas, including areas commonly known on campus as "The Porch" and "The Garage."

UMD was also recognized for its membership in the association for more than fifty years, an honor that demonstrates Kirby's longstanding commitment to the College Union Idea. "Founded in 1914, ACUI is a nonprofit educational organization that brings together college union and student activities professionals from hundreds of schools in seven countries. Its members work on urban and rural campuses, in two-year and four-year institutions, and at large and small schools. They are students and administrators whose mission is to build campus community. ACUI enriches them all through education, advocacy, and the delivery of services."

Professional staff from Kirby Student Center currently serve on three association-level committees and on the regional leadership team.
