Like the Grinch’s heart, Bulldog Pride is scheduled to grow three sizes next week, as UMD’s homecoming celebration is unleashed.
Here are a few highlights:
Corn Roast
Monday, October 16
11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Kirby Terrace, the area outside of the Kirby Student Center, 1120 Kirby Drive
Kicking off Homecoming with free corn grilled in the husks. 1,000 students expected to chow down.
Family Carnival
Saturday, October 21
11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
In the green space behind Malosky Stadium, 1336 University Drive
Food trucks will fuel the Recreational Sports and Outdoors Program (RSOP) and YMCA’s bouncy house and yard games– while participants can learn about science and engineering through Duluth Children’s Museum stomp rockets and Minnesota Sea Grant’s invasive species activities. This event is free and open to the public.
Homecoming Parade
Saturday, October 21
11 – 11:45 a.m.
The parade marches through campus on University Drive. It starts near the Darland Administration Building and ends at the intersection of Oakland Avenue/Kirby Drive and West St. Marie Street. Here’s the route.
About 50 campus and community groups are entered. This year’s Grand Marshal is Champ, everyone’s favorite bulldog and UMD’s official mascot. (Fun Fact: Getting Champ to participate was easy, organizers report. They simply asked Champ, “Wanna go in the car?”)
The parade was reignited four years ago after a decades-long furlough. This is the second year the parade has been on campus instead of in downtown Duluth, a move designed to make it easier for Bulldogs to attend. (Free hotdogs for students along the route is an additional incentive.)
Athletics
Several Athletics events are planned throughout the week, including UMD Women’s Hockey vs. U of M on Friday and Saturday, October 21 and 22, Volleyball, Men’s Hockey, and, of course, the big football game–
Bulldogs vs. Minot State on Saturday, October 21
Tailgating starts at 11 a.m. before the 1:05 p.m. kickoff
