The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) publicly reaffirmed accreditation of UMD for an additional 10 years.
“This reaffirmed accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission acknowledges the commitment and hard work of our faculty and staff and validates activities that strengthen our culture for continuous improvement and excellence,” said UMD Chancellor Lendley C. Black.
In its report, the HLC review team highlighted demonstrated progress toward UMD’s strategic goal for social justice and with regard to the assessment of student learning. The team noted many examples of ways the institution has worked to make improvements in these areas and reinforced further advancements of campus efforts.
The HLC’s decision comes as the result of a multi-year effort on UMD’s campus. Dozens of members of the UMD community contributed to the accreditation review materials and many more participated in the review process, which included a campus visit by the commission’s review team in April 2018. An accreditation report update will occur in 2021–22.
UMD was first accredited by the Higher Learning Commission in 1968. UMD’s next review site visit required for reaffirmation of accreditation will occur in 10 years, which is the maximum period between reviews available to institutions.
The HLC is an independent corporation that was founded in 1895 as one of six regional institutional accreditors in the United States.
