Glensheen rolled out its musical offerings for the 2018 Concerts on the Pier, a series of free music concerts held every Wednesday in July. The acts set up on the Congdon’s pier entertaining upwards of 2,000 attendees on the shoreline and in all manner of watercraft.
Local culinary creations and drinks will be provided by local favorites like Love Creamery, Zenith Bread Project, The Log Home Wood Fired Pizza, Steep Oblique, The Rambler (July 11, 18, 25) and for the Fourth of July, the King of Creams. A cash bar will be provided by Grandma's Restaurants.
The gates open at 6 pm. Music starts at 7 pm and ends at approximately 8 pm. This is an all-ages show, which is free and open to the public.

July 4: BIG WAVE DAVE & THE RIPPLES (soul/funk/blues)
Formed in February 2011, the band has evolved and adapted into a group that plays the music they love and gets people on the dance floor. The band performs live throughout the Twin Ports area and branches into the Cites. The originals and homages to the current and past greats provide the vibrations to get people smiling and moving their feet as the eight-piece horn band plays soul/funk/rock/blues for the masses.
July 11: THE LATELYS (indie/blues/rock)
The Latelys are a lively trio from Duluth that have been playing regularly in the Twin Ports since starting the band in December 2016. Their vocal and lyric-driven songs challenge the status quo of rock and press into the sounds of soul and funk, with a vibrant backing instrumentation of piano, bass, and drums.
July 18: BLACK RIVER REVUE (bluegrass/Americana)
Using a Bluegrass instrumentation, Black River Revue has crafted their own sound made up of mostly original music, which can be heard on their debut album "Garbage Pickin” and later "Spring Thaw." Five years of touring, personnel change, and personal growth has inspired a third record "Just Can't Win," released in September 2017. This album has enjoyed radio play worldwide and charted on independent and college radio states across the United States.
July 25: THE BLACK-EYED SNAKES (blues/rock)
“Look to a place where Low, The Fall, and Willie Dixon all have something to say to one another. Then dance fool.” That’s how Spin Magazine’s Andrew Beaujon rolled up the Black-eyed Snakes, a genre-bending electric blues band from Duluth, Minnesota fronted by Low's Alan Sparhawk. Cascading, entrancing beats push thick, raunchy, sometimes-psychedelic guitars into the soul like a lost love or a knife in the back. “The jagged-toothed edge of the guitar alone could saw through every fiber of your emotional restraint,” wrote Melissa Maerz in City Pages. Sparhawk formed the Black-eyed Snakes in 2000 with Bob Olson on guitar and Brad Nelson on drums.
Concertgoers are encouraged to bike, boat, walk or kayak to the concerts since parking is limited. Plus, experts say the best seats in the house are on Lake Superior. The parking lot and street parking fills quickly. Please refer to the City of Duluth’s alternate side parking calendar here.
Concertgoers will have the option to purchase Glensheen’s newest tour on concert evenings. Glensheen is open from 9am - 9pm, seven days a week during the months of July and August.
The NEW Summer Evening Tour offers a guided experience through all five floors of Glensheen — including the attic. Plus, as a highlight only available in July and August, guests will enjoy a narrated walk through the estate’s Vegetable & Formal gardens, onto the famous Stone Arch Bridge and finish with a showcase of our rarely opened Boathouse.
“It’s really a ‘best of mashup’ of some of the favorite elements of all the tours,” says Glensheen director Daniel Hartman. “Those who take it will have a solid Glensheen foundation.”
The Summer Evening Tour is offered at $30 a person and limited to 10 people. Glensheen will continue with its self guided tours, as well as the guided experiences of the Classic, Full Mansion, Nooks & Crannies, Servants, Photo, Grounds, Premier and Best Damn Tours.
Outside beverages are prohibited at Concerts on the Pier. Service animals are allowed on the estate.
