NATURAL, WILD, REMOTE: WINTER AT ITS BEST
UMD has partnered with the Boulder Lake Environmental Learning Center for over two decades to offer pristine outdoor opportunities for UMD students and the community. Winter is a great time to explore what Boulder Lake has to offer.
SNOWSHOE AND CROSS COUNTRY SKI
Located 18 miles north of Duluth, there are easy and advanced groomed trails for every level. Take a break at the "Wolfski's Ski Den" warming shack with free hot chocolate and cider. It's open daily sunrise to sunset. In addition to the 21 kilometers of classical skiing, there are 11 kilometers groomed for skate-skiing. Trails are groomed Fridays and Mondays, and/or as needed. No fee or Minnesota State Ski Pass is required. Snowshoe and Ski Maps
SNOWSHOE MAKING WORKSHOP
December 15 or December 17, 2014, 9 am–4 pm.
$120/participant
Participants will come away from this workshop with their own pair of laced Ojibwe-style snowshoes.
The instructors will demonstrate bending snowshoe frames and teach lacing techniques.
Participants will be responsible for varnishing and purchasing bindings.

Each year, Boulder Lake Environmental Learning Center engages hundreds of UMD participants through internships, assistantships, May-term classes, field trips, undergraduate research projects, workshops, presentations, organized recreation events, and more. UMD partners with the Boulder Lake Environmental Learning Center, an 18,000-acre classroom providing innovative education to increase awareness, understanding, and skill related to sustainable natural resource management.
