Dr. Tarla Rai Peterson, University of Texas at El Paso communication professor, will discuss the concept of "energy democracy” on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. in Bohannon Hall 90 on the UMD campus. This event is free and open to the public.

Activists and organizers who use the term "energy democracy” seek to steer this upheaval toward more democratic involvement and a just energy transition. Dr. Peterson aims to compose an engaged research agenda that contributes to both democratizing energy and addressing the existential climate crisis.

After a number of years of extreme weather events, it seems clear that stabilizing rates of climate change and making energy systems more resilient to climate-related disaster should be a top priority.

Sustainability challenges facing society in the 21st century demand an understanding of the full spectrum of energy system research, development and deployment.

Rather than despair, noting the confluence of complex policy debates over energy system change and the availability of new energy technologies enables unparalleled possibilities for innovation.

The UMD Department of Communication is hosting Dr. Peterson as part of its ongoing program of public lectures.
