A UMD campus and community event, “Walk a Mile in their Shoes: An Immigrant Simulation,” will be held on Constitution Day: Tuesday, September 17. It will take place from 1:30-4 pm in room 105 of the Chester Park Building, 31 West College Street in Duluth. Refreshments will be served at the event, which is free and open to the public.
"The exercise will allow students and community members to go through the difficult experience of immigrating to the United States," says Kevin Swanberg, one of the organizers of the event. Swanberg, who is an instructor in the UMD Department of English, Linguistics, and Writing Studies, says participants will visit stations which simulate the current U.S. immigration process. They will take a citizenship test, cross the border, simulate ICE detention, go to court, and finally find a job in the United States.
Stories are still being accepted in the form of a short write-up. Anonymous submissions will be accepted. Immigration stories should be sent to Swanberg at [email protected].
