Driven. The Campaign for the University of Minnesota Duluth

UMD launched the public phase of its ten-year capital campaign under the theme “Wanted: The adventurous and the generous.”

It seeks to raise $120 million by June 30, 2021 to strengthen its role as the region’s premier public research university.

UMD’s campaign is part of an overall effort by the University of Minnesota, whose campaign was announced on September 8, 2017.

“This is an opportunity to empower our mission of preparing students to thrive as lifelong learners and globally engaged citizens,” said UMD Chancellor Lendley (Lynn) Black. “And through this campaign, our extraordinary institution broadens its ability to transform the lives of future generations.”

The campaign started in 2011 and has been in its leadership silent phase since that time. Black says he’s pleased that UMD is well on its way, having raised $84,839,441 million, or 71% of UMD’s goal thus far. “Together we’re providing more opportunities for students to find their passion, recruiting top faculty, and ensuring that UMD benefits our state, our nation, and the world.”

Campaigning for UMD’s Priorities

Funds from tuition and the state legislature are used to support basic operations, and various funding sources work together to help UMD achieve its mission.

Many of UMD’s funding sources are restricted and designated for specific purposes, and private gifts provide the margin of excellence in supporting students, faculty, staff and programs beyond what is covered by tuition and state allocations.

UMD’s campaign is focused on:

$42.5 million for Student Support

Raising money for student scholarships will offset some of the debt that follows graduates off campus. Currently, 74 percent of UMD students graduate with debt and the average loan debt for those students is $29,014.

$27.5 million in Experiential Learning

Hands-on opportunities prepare UMD students for the workforce, and campaign gifts for experiential learning create new opportunities for UMD students to enrich their education through immersion in the workplace, community, and other cultures.

$30 million in Faculty and Research Support

Campaign gifts that strengthen UMD’s talented faculty– scholars who are conducting important research and providing the highest quality education for UMD’s students.

$20 million in Outstanding Facilities

Raising funds to ensure UMD’s facilities evolve to meet the educational needs of a rapidly changing world.
