“Beads: Northern Traditions and Inspirations"

Art Education Professor Alison Aune hosts two workshops as part of Nordic Center exhibition.

School of Fine Arts Professor Alison Aune has work in the exhibit “Beads: Northern Traditions and Inspirations" at the Nordic Center, 23 N Lake Ave, Duluth, Minnesota. The exhibition opens on Friday April 26, from 5-8 p.m., as part of the Duluth Downtown Arts Walk. The exhibition runs through May 16, and all events are free and open to the public.

On Tuesday, April 23, from 4:30-6:30 p.m., Professor Aune and Ojibwe artist and educator Wendy Savage will present a lecture and workshop for art teachers and community members.

On Sunday, April 28, from 1-3 p.m., Professor Aune and UMD art education students will present SunFunday: Bead Inspirations for Children and Families.

On Sunday, May 5, from 1-3 p.m., Vesterheim curator Laurann Gilbertson will present "Sacred Symbols: Folk Art of Norway,” co-sponsored by the Sons of Norway.

On Thursday, May 16 from 5-7 p.m., all are welcome for a closing reception with discussion, food, and music.

The exhibition focuses on cultural bead traditions and innovations in Nordic and Ojibwe communities. Artists include: Roxanne DeLille, Herb Fineday, Carl Gawboy, Tashia Hart, Karen Kennan, Judith Kjenstad, Marcie McIntire, Carolyn Olson, Arna Rennan, Karen Savage-Blue, Leah Savage, Lisa Savage, Wendy Savage, Kathleen Westcott, Cleoria White, and Dennis White. Artworks are from private collections, the Vesterheim Museum of Decorah Iowa, the Fond Du Lac Reservation, and Grand Portage.
