2017 Summit on Equity, Diversity, and Multiculturalism

UMD’s long-term commitment to an inclusive campus continues at annual event.

UMD is hosting a Summit on Equity, Diversity, and Multiculturalism tomorrow, Wednesday, February 22, 2017 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Kirby Ballroom, 1120 Kirby Drive.

The all-day event includes more than 40 interactive workshops, presentations, and lectures designed to fuel discussion. A complete list of workshops can be found here.

Chancellor Lendley (Lynn) Black says the summit is part of UMD’s ongoing effort to create an inclusive campus community. “Advancing equity, diversity, and social justice requires persistence and long-term difficult work at all levels of our campus community. Our commitment to becoming a more inclusive campus is as strong as ever.”

Summit co-chair Julie Kim adds that tomorrow’s event is unique because it involves all aspects of UMD. Students, faculty, and staff will learn together. “The Summit is an opportunity for connection, collaboration, and learning about ways to create an environment that promotes equity for racial, ethnic, and intersecting identities.”

Debby Irving, author of Waking Up White and Finding Myself in the Story of Race, is presenting a keynote speech at 4 p.m. Her book is about her journey recognizing the racial ignorance in America and working to educate others on the subject. She is available to answer questions about her work from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

This is the 24th year that UMD has hosted the Summit on Equity, Diversity, and Multiculturalism.
