For the third year in a row, UMD’s Career and Internship Services staff is announcing that nearly all 2015-16 UMD graduates are employed or continuing their education.
The extensive Graduate Follow-up Report shows that 97% of the grads are successful in employment or through continuing their education. (81% are employed, 16% are continuing their education.)
This is a trifecta of sorts. The 2015, 2016, and now 2017 surveys all found 97% of Bulldogs in this category.
The Applicable Arts
There’s been a bump in College of Liberal Arts and School of Fine Arts alumni who have careers related to their majors.
Between the 2011-12 and 2015-16 survey, there was a 16% increase for the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) and a 10% increase for the School of Fine Arts (SFA), with 78% of CLA grads and 75% of SFA grads now reporting working in positions related or somewhat related to their majors.
CLA Dean Susan Maher says that this is due, in part, to her school’s fluidity. “Liberal Arts colleges have not stood still in time. We’ve added important new programs for 21st century professions that are paving the way into exciting careers for UMD graduates.”
School of Fine Arts Dean Robert Kase adds that more people working in the arts changes the way his school tells its story. “It used to be that we’d talk about ‘transferrable skills’ as a reason to study the arts. The reality is the industry is flush with opportunities to make a living. We’re making sure that our students enter the workforce ready to create in a way that allows them to flourish.”
The Graduate Follow-up Report found 98% of the SFA alumni surveyed are working or continuing their education, while 97% of CLA alumni surveyed are working or continuing their education.
Masters and Doctorates Highlights
Career & Internship Services staff members say there’s more good news from Bulldogs who pursued their masters and doctorates– 98% are either employed or continuing their education.
Ninety-four percent report that their employment is related or somewhat related to their major.
About the Survey
Career & Internship Services received responses from 1,540 (89%) alumni who received their undergraduate degrees between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016.
Other findings:
- 89% indicated their employment is related or somewhat related to their major
- 50% said they had completed an internship
- 13% said they had participated in a study abroad program
- 83% reported accepting employment in Minnesota
