The Next Big Thing: UMD’s Cultural Entrepreneurship Fair

UMD is hosting the semester-end Cultural Entrepreneurship (CUE) Fair on Wed., Nov. 30 from 5 -7 p.m. in the Kirby Ballroom.

More than 20 creative businesses will be on display, including several that are in the initial stages of being launched in Duluth.

CUE professor Aparna Katre says the Cultural Entrepreneurship Fair allows her students to showcase their ideas while taking steps towards application, “We’re preparing students to be entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs working within nonprofit, private, and public sector institutions.”

The Cultural Entrepreneurship Fair is free and open to the public.

Some examples of students’ projects include:

  • OUTDoorsWear: Where transgender and gender-variant people can find clothes that comfortably fit their bodies.
  • Connect2Me: Connecting undergraduate students to the local hiring community in a more personable way by matching their passions, visions, and work ethic.
  • UMD Alive: An all-encompassing gateway into the events happening around the community.
  • Repurpose the Bottle: Reducing environmental waste and creating a thriving arts community by making art from glass bottles
  • Get them Outdoors: An outdoor-like study area to improve students' health, well-being, and academic performance
  • Save Our Students: A platform which facilitates effective transition of students to independence

UMD’s Cultural Entrepreneurship (CUE) program began in 2013 and is the only one of it’s kind in the country. It combines the traditional lessons of business schools with the creative thinking that is most often cultivated in the arts.
