Kanopy Updates

An update to Kanopy access through the Library.

Kanopy is a familiar source for video usage in the classroom, in online learning, and for recreational viewing; however, UMD Library users will notice a change to Kanopy this year.

For the past two years, the Kathryn A. Martin Library has provided access to Kanopy using a Patron Drive Acquisition model. Under this model, every video available from Kanopy was featured on their platform. When four or more UMD-affiliated users each watched a video for longer than 30 seconds, Kanopy automatically charged UMD for a license. The popularity of the service grew, and we soon found that demand was outpacing funding.

The Kanopy videos we have licensed remain available. Through the library catalog, you can search for and access currently licensed Kanopy videos which can be used without limitations in the classroom or in online learning. Despite this change users can be assured that purchased content remains available to students, faculty, and staff - on or off campus. Any saved or bookmarked links to these videos will also continue to function. This change will permit the library to more closely manage and dedicate funding to developing a streaming video collection that supports curriculum at UMD.

If you have questions, or would like to learn more about streaming video options for your class, please contact your liaison librarian.
