Work by ITSS staff is underway on the University of Minnesota's Next Generation Network (NGN) upgrade on the UMD campus. NGN is the University system-wide project that will upgrade all components of the University's network, including both wired and wireless (WiFi), over the next 3 years.
New WiFi Equipment
The first phase of the NGN project at UMD will focus on the replacement of WiFi equipment in all campus buildings. Work will begin in the residence halls and apartments this summer with other buildings being phased in over the next year.
Temporary Service Interruptions
At certain times during the NGN project, WiFi and network service will be temporarily interrupted in campus buildings where work is happening. ITSS will be sharing information about scheduled NGN work through the ITSS website, email, social media, meetings and signage. Please stay tuned to your email inbox for more information about NGN work schedules and look for informational signage in your building to indicate upcoming work.
Standardized WiFi Access
Another part of NGN will be a standardization of WiFi access across all UMN campuses. This means there will be a change to UMD wireless access. Eventually, all WiFi access will be either Eduroam or Guest.
