UMD's Department of Art & Design invites the public to attend both the Open Studio and the Annual Student Exhibition Reception & Awards Ceremony at the Tweed Museum of Art on Saturday, April 22, 2017.
Art & Design's Annual Student Exhibition runs from April 4-30, 2017 at the Tweed Museum of Art. This is an annual exhibition of work executed by UMD students and juried by visiting artists. This year’s jurors are Joshua Carlon—senior producer at catchfire, a Minneapolis ad agency, and host of “Cinema Lounge” the Independent Filmmaker Project’s monthly film talk show—and Homer Rutledge—a key contributor to Google’s groundbreaking product branding system, Material Design. The Annual Student Exhibition features creative work across a range of media, including animation, ceramics, digital art, drawing, graphic design, motion graphics, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video.
Join students, faculty, staff and community members on Saturday, April 22 from 4-6 pm at the Annual Student Show Reception. Help celebrate the students’ work, enjoy music and refreshments, and stay for the awards ceremony at 5 pm.
Also on Saturday, from 1-4 pm, UMD’s Department of Art and Design will open its doors to the public. Come view student work and visit the facilities from 1-4 pm. Open Studio is perfect for all ages and fun for families! Open Studio includes classroom tours, demonstrations, hands-on activities, live music, and a sale of affordable student art work. The studios are located in AB Anderson Hall, Montague Hall, and the Humanities Building at 1201 Ordean Court on the University of Minnesota Duluth campus.
The Open Studio event is a joint effort created by Art & Design majors and student groups, including the Student Design Organization, Student Photographic Cooperative, Media Arts Club, Mud Guild, Art Education Club, Art History Symposium, and the Art Guild. Students will display creative work and demo various art processes such as stone lithography printmaking and screen-printing, ceramics wheel throwing, welding, stop-motion animation, and digital art techniques including interactive projection.
At the Open Studio event, the public is invited to take part in a glow-stick photo booth, explore art education activities, henna tattoos, wheel-throwing tournaments, interactive painting, and more. Student work from all art and design areas will be on display, including the senior portfolios of the UMD Graphic Design majors. Affordable art, ceramics, and posters will be available for purchase, along with Open Studio T-shirts. Food will also be available at the Pop Art Café, sponsored by the Art History Symposium. Short films by the Emerging Filmmakers Project Duluth will be screening throughout the event.
