Linguistics Professor Publishes Book

Professor William Salmon publishes dialects book.

William Salmon, professor of Linguistics and head of the Department of English, Linguistics, and Writing Studies at UMD, has just published a single-authored research monograph that looks at negative auxiliary placement in three dialects of English.

The book, entitled Negative Inversion, Social Meaning, and Gricean Implicature, is the culmination of two years of fieldwork in African American, Anglo, and Chicano communities in Texas, and it provides solutions to several long-standing puzzles of Negative Inversion syntax and pragmatics. It is published by De Gruyter Mouton.
