UMD Theatre is thrilled to announce that the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) has again invited UMD to perform at the Region 5 Festival in Des Moines, Iowa. UMD Theatre presents Antigone, written by Sophocles and translated by Don Taylor, which is one of only seven productions selected to perform in the seven-state KCACTF regionals. KCACTF regionals runs from January 21 - 27, 2018.
Due to the sold out September/October shows and to help defray travel costs to KCACTF, UMD Theatre is hosting two encore performances of this highly acclaimed show:

Over the past 30 years, UMD Theatre has been selected 13 times to present at the KCACTF Regionals and has been chosen five times to perform at the National Festival held at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. UMD Theatre accomplished this rare feat of back-to-back KCACTF touring productions once before with three back-to-back KCACTF productions in 2002, 2003 & 2004 (Movie Game,Blur and Lloyd's Prayer.)

One of the most enduring ancient tragedies presents universal questions of power and civic duty through a modern translation reflecting current political conflicts. Sophocles' play Antigone has uncanny parallels to contemporary American politics.
When this play was translated by Don Taylor in 1986 he commented, "My main aim in making this new version of these much-translated works has been to make them seem that they were written not 2,500 years ago, but the day before, yesterday, today, and tomorrow."
