Thirty years ago, feminist performance group the Guerrilla Girls banded together to call attention to the biases inherent in the history of art and evident in the collections of many of the most famous art museums. Since that time, they have used public presentations, protest demonstrations, activist workshops, and visual agitprop materials to expand their critique to include the representation of women and people of color in not only the art world, but also in Hollywood, the music industry, and even U.S. politics. Armed with statistical facts, they continue to fight the injustices of institutional sexism and racism in culture at large.
On Saturday, January 16, 2016, two founding members of the Guerrilla Girls will be in Duluth, where they will perform a public gig at the University of Minnesota Duluth. On the eve of this performance, Friday, January 15, several local art and cultural institutions will stage a series of downtown events in the spirit of the Guerrilla Girls.
