4North: New Work by Alison Aune, Kirsten Aune, Ann Klefstad, and Arna Rennan” explores a sense of place through four distinct voices. The artists share a Scandinavian heritage, as well as live and work in northern Minnesota. While the four create in disparate media—painting, sculpture, and textile arts—the threads connecting their work reveal a deep reverence for the natural world and the translation and transmutation of patterns and symbols.
About Alison Aune
Alison Aune great-grandparents emigrated from Sweden to Minnesota and as a painter, Aune honors her heritage, finding inspiration in Swedish patterns and motifs, nature, and the Aune received her M.A. from the University of Minnesota-Duluth and her Ph.D. from Ohio University Athens. She served as the education coordinator at the Tweed Museum of Art before joining the UMD Department of Art and Design, where she has received numerous grants and awards including a Fulbright Scholar and Teaching award to Sweden and a grant to conduct a Cross-Cultural Study of the Socio-Aesthetic Goals of Art Education in Scandinavia. She has exhibited her artwork in over 70 solo and group exhibitions in Sweden and the U.S., including a solo show at the DAI in 2007.

On Thursday, November 10, 2016, the Duluth Art Institute will open a Nordic-themed exhibition, 4North: New Work by Alison Aune, Kirsten Aune, Ann Klefstad, a reception from 5-7 PM. The exhibit explores sense of place through 4 different voices. All artists share a heritage from Scandinavia, as well as live and work in northern Minnesota. While the work crosses disparate media painting, sculpture, and textile arts threads connecting the art reveal a deep reverence for the natural world and the translation and transmutation of patterns and symbols. The exhibition will be on view through February 2, 2017, with related programming running throughout.
